Where words come from

Etymology is the archaeology and history of words: digging through a word’s recorded forms to its earliest root, then following it forward through every language that inherited or borrowed it, as its sound and sense shifted along the way. Etymapology draws that journey on the globe — where a word began, every place it passed through, and how it reached today.

Etymology

A word’s history is rarely a straight line. Nice once meant “ignorant”; serendipity is a 1754 coinage from an old name for Sri Lanka. Some words have no agreed origin at all — the map says so rather than inventing one.

How to use the map

Search any word, name, or idiom in the bar above. Words already traced appear as you type and load instantly.
Play the journey with the button at the bottom, or drag the timeline. Hover a marker for its stage and use Prev / Next — or the ← → keys — to walk the journey at your own pace.
Lines are descent; arcs are borrowings; a ring with no path is a word formed in place. The legend at the bottom left has the rest.
Click a marker to see the word’s cognates — its relatives in other languages, from the same root.
This panel lists every stage in order; scrolling it flies the map. Tuck it away with › for a clear map.
Words nobody has traced yet take about forty seconds to work out from scratch. Sign in to be the first — after that it’s instant for everyone.
